When To Visit Us
For severe eye emergencies like cuts, punctures, or burns, please visit your nearest emergency room. Our team may be able to help if you’re experiencing:
- Sudden eye pain
- Sudden vision loss
- Infections
- Trauma
- Black eyes
- Eye swelling or bulging
- Sudden flashes and floaters
Common Eye Emergencies
The best way to prevent eye emergencies is to wear protective eyewear whenever you’re playing sports, working with hazardous chemicals, or spending time at a job site with lots of debris and particles.
Protective eyewear can help prevent 90% of all eye-related emergencies. However, accidents happen, and there are several types of emergencies you may need help treating. Learn more about these emergencies or give our team a call.
Trauma
Trauma refers to impact in and around your eye. In some cases, you may develop some bruising (a black eye), but these events can also cause:
- Eye pain
- Sudden vision changes
- Eye bleeding
- Fluid loss
Chemical Exposure
A number of household chemicals can cause serious eye emergencies. If your eyes come into contact with any chemical, flush them with cool, clean water for 15 minutes and call us or your emergency room immediately.
Foreign Object
Some foreign objects may be a small particle of dust that your eyes can wash away with blinking. However, larger particles can cause greater discomfort and may increase the risk of damaging the surface of your eyes.
Eye Disease
If you have an eye disease or the risk of developing one, get in touch with our team immediately if you experience sudden eye pain, vision loss, nausea, and eye redness.
Angle-closure glaucoma, wet macular degeneration, and retinal detachments are known to cause emergency symptoms that may lead to permanent blindness.
Severe Eye Emergencies
For cuts, punctures, and scratches, we recommend visiting an emergency room. If you’re unsure if your situation requires a visit to the ER, contact us, and we can get you the help you need.

Testimonials
“I noticed I had a problem seeing years ago and finally decided to do something about it. I thought I was going to need surgery on both my eyebrows and eyelids, but Dr. Terpstra recommended just the brows! She did such a great job explaining things and Lake Eye helped get my insurance taken care of. The healing process has gone very well and I can see so much better!”
James Malone, Eyebrow Surgery & Optical
“Been coming here 18 years … highly recommend!”
Bob Knorr, General Eye Care & Cataract Surgery
“I chose to have LASIK done after wearing glasses and contacts for 20 years. I love waking up being able to see immediately instead of fumbling for my glasses or stumbling into the bathroom to put in my contacts. The entire procedure was a breeze—Dr. Gutti and his team are knowledgeable and friendly. I wish I had done it sooner!”
